Majestic Oak Vineyard is a family affair, the property of which was bought by their grandparents back in 1967. It all began with the Gentry-Gustafson family a few generations ago. Grandfather Gentry had gone to a schoolhouse at the bottom of Lake Casitas before the lake was a drop in anyone’s imagination. (Since then the generations stayed dry and attended Nordhoff High School where mom nee Gentry and dad Gustafson met in the 12th grade.) But it wasn’t until 2008 that the now Gustafson-Coble family ended much of their outside entrepreneurial ventures and decided to plant their first grapevines. Voila, a vineyard was born! By 2010, they had educated themselves enough to start making wine.

Daughter Tara Coble taught wine education in Santa Ynez and conducted “Sideways” wine tours there before Majestic Oak Vineyard took off. Her husband, Andrew Coble, a former baseball coach at the University of Rochester and now a one-on-one special-ed teacher here in Ojai, became the vineyard’s winemaker. Father Terry and brother Micah own and work at Ojai Door and Window, as well as help out at the winery, along with brother Tyson, who works with Tara at the tasting room. Tyson’s son is the 5th generation to go to Nordhoff.

In 2016 the family opened its tasting room right in the middle of downtown Ojai. On the street, atop a flight of wooden stairs hangs the Majestic Oak Vineyard sign with its graphic oak logo representing the over 200 year old oak tree in the middle of the family’s vineyard. At the bottom of the staircase is a shaded patio with comfortable wooden benches and wooden tables that serve as the front patio leading into the cave-like tasting room. The room’s underground vibe is reminiscent of the wine caves you find in Napa and Sonoma. A raised window frames the outside patio like a rectangular porthole. Both the patio and tasting room are inviting spaces to sample a flight or a sip a glass of this vineyard’s delicious wine.

The family is sharing these wines with you at the Taste of Ojai annual event and once you sip them, you’ll agree the taste is quite majestic.
