Ojai Rotie, smack dab in the center of Ojai’s historic down town, is a favorite local watering hole. With tables outside shaded by the branches of a sprawling mature tree, and a separate charming tasting area, the restaurant is a casual, picnic-feeling social experience. Many of you might remember Chef Claud Mann as the on-air host of TBS’s long running TV series, “Dinner & A Movie,” described as one of the 100 reasons to watch TV by Rolling Stone. He and his long-time culinary partner, Chef Larry “Lorenzo” Nicola, have taken their love of chicken and prepared a simply-crafted menu featuring a la carte and full-dinner selections (which includes two sides and grilled flat bread) of French-style, free-range, succulent (and so delicious) rotisserie chicken for their restaurant.
Also on that menu are freshly-baked, handmade sourdough bread, an array of innovative “picnic” side dishes that include caramelized cauliflower, cole slaw, and marcella white beans, and “snacks” such as Rotie olives, a 3-cheese long board, deviled eggs, roasted garlic and charred eggplant. Of course, among the salad selections is one with Rotie’s rotisserie chicken, another is made with butter lettuce, Watkin’s Ranch bacon and some blue cheese with a red wine vinaigrette. Sandwiches include one that features the Rotie chicken, but there’s also a grilled eggplant sandwich, and an avocado tartine. And then there’s the special wine and beer list highlighting Ojai Valley agriculture, viniculture and the “Ojai Appellation.”
Ojai Rotie evokes a perfect picnic party vibe (hence the “picnic” sides) and a fun, energetic feeling of community with fellow diners, whether sitting under the Ojai sun in the afternoon, or brilliant stars at night.
