Isn’t it amazing how one movie helped change an entire wine-tasting region? Twelve years after “Sideways” was released, “Sideways” tasting tours are still one of the hottest tickets in the Santa Ynez valley, and a highlight of those tours is the beautiful Sanger Family of Wines tasting room downtown Los Olivos.

The Sanger family started in the wine business over five years ago by purchasing property and planting a vineyard, then hired Brett Escalera to be their winemaker. In 2011 they produced their first wines, a super Tuscan style red blend (Cielo Rubio) and a Northern Italian style white blend (Estelle Bianco) under the Marianello brand. With familia roots in Italy for Bill Sanger and for Brett, it’s no surprise that they turned to their heritage for wine inspiration. In 2013, the family and Brett joined forces on a grander scale by purchasing a majority interest in Escalera-Boulet, LLC, with its Consilience and Tre Anelli brands.

The grapes planted at their Sanger Estate Vineyard are varietals that are primarily for their Marianello label, and their Sanger Santa Rita Hills Vineyard is planted exclusively for the Consilience label Pinot Noir. Both Sanger vineyards are farmed sustainably and their wines are a delicious addition to the area.

A trip to the Sanger Family of Wines table at Taste of Ojai will let you sip and trip the light fantastic.
