When you walk through the red front door into Bonnie Lu’s Country Café, you’re greeted like an old friend even if you’ve never been there before.  The café, with its retro fifties décor, embraces and welcomes you, and Jenny Newell and her waitresses make you feel right at home.  Bonnie Lu’s is a happy place. In fact, as the menu tells you, there’s a $5 charge for whining!

Jenny, who started as a dishwasher in town and worked her way up in the restaurant business, opened Bonnie Lu’s (named in honor of her mother) over twenty years ago October 20th (that’s Jenny with her mom on the cover of the menu) and has been making delicious comfort food ever since.  Lori Farrar is Bonnie Lu’s manager and has been Jenny’s BFFs since the 5th grade.

But it’s all about comfort food and this country café’s menu offers “pancakes & more” choices, including biscuit & gravy and delicious omelettes. Try Bubba’s Country Breakfast, Bonnie Lu’s take on eggs benedict: a biscuit topped with sausage patties, poached eggs and smothered in homemade sausage gravy.  Don’t want breakfast, choose from a variety of salads, or hot and cold sandwiches… a “hot” favorite of mine: Felicia’s Reuben on toasted marbled, dark/light rye.  The Reuben is named for Jenny’s daughter. Or give Diane’s delicious three cheese grilled cheese a try.  In fact, most of the menu selections are named after friends and family.  From salads to soups, burgers to sandwiches and everything in between, there’s a comfort food dish for everyone.

So, as you’re nibbling on tastes at Taste of Ojai, come on over and grab a nibble (or three or four) from Bonnie Lu’s.
