When you walk through the red front door into Bonnie Lu’s Country Café…

…you’re greeted like an old friend even if you’ve never been there before. The café with its retro fifties décor embraces and welcomes you…

… and the waitresses make you feel right at home.

Bonnie Lu’s is a happy place. In fact, as the menu tells you, there’s a $5 charge for whining!

Jenny Newell, who started as a dishwasher in town and worked her way up in the restaurant business, opened Bonnie Lu’s (named in honor of her mother) nineteen years ago October 20th (that’s Jenny with her mom on the cover of the menu)…

…and has been making delicious comfort food ever since. From traditional breakfasts of pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage to biscuits with gravy, to lunch items that include salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers and everything in between. Even “q” food from a three cheese quesadilla to a selection of quiches.

When I asked Jenny about the provenance of the quilt I love hanging by the back door, she told me that it was made from tee shirts from past Bonnie Lu cancer fundraisers… a fundraiser (usually in April) the café hosts for a family in town in the midst of fighting the disease.

Jenny hasn’t yet decided what she’s serving at Taste of Ojai. One year it was those delicious biscuits and gravy, another year it was yummy Reuben sandwiches. But come visit her booth, because whatever she decides, it will be made with love and be downhome good.
