“Family Sports Bar.” No, that’s not an oxymoron. JJ’s Sports Zone is a sports bar and restaurant that encourages everyone to bring their kids, watch a game together, have a burger and chili cheese fries or partake of the kid’s menu. It also hosts kids’ game and award dinners and fundraisers.
The bar and restaurant inside and out, are furnished simply and comfortably.
There’s even a game room!
General Manager Kimberly Brandow told me that JJ’s was born when owners Dave Skaggs and Steve and Michelle Perry met at their sons’ athletic games. One thing led to another and they decided to open a sports bar where they could bring their kids.
Everything is made from scratch, with fresh ingredients, organic beef, free range chicken, and locally made breads and desserts, much of which are made right in JJ’s own kitchen. And, many of the recipes cooked up are ones Dave and Steve have collected over the years.
Kim, who started here as a dishwasher back east and worked her way west and up, only had to mention once that JJ’s made their BBQ tri-tip fresh every day, served with a special sauce of secret ingredients. I had to try it, along with a beer in a frozen 18oz schooner.
Can I just say… Touchdown! Home run! Goal! Pick a metaphor!!!
And there’s more. Other sandwiches include a tuna melt, a turkey club, even catfish with your choice of bread and side. Or gobble up some fried calamari or hot wings… a southwest chicken salad… or a dinner of tiger prawns, fish & chips or mac & cheese made with rigatoni pasta, smothered in gorgonzola cheese, topped with bread crumbs and applewood smoked bacon. Be still my cheese lovin’ heart!
If you stop by JJ’s say hello to Kim… her warmth and friendliness alone make you want to come back again and again.
And, as you round the bases through Taste Of Ojai, stop by JJ’s and have some of their good ol’ home cooking.
