“We believe in the power of good vibes and great beers. We believe in thinking big, and staying small. We think vans are better for camping than commuting. We believe these boots were made for hiking, not just walking. When the waves are epic, we think sharing them with a friend makes them even better. We believe in tasting life to its fullest, one sip at a time.”
Thus sayeth the owners of Topa Topa Brewery Company:
Jack Dyer, a former sales & marketing executive…
…and Kyle Thompson, a former audio engineer…
… were home brewers who moved to Ojai and wanted to make beer full time. They teamed up with Casey Harris, the former head brewer at Stone Brewing Co. in San Francisco, and Ryan Jacobs who has a design and branding studio.
The tasting room’s beer flight is served in trays made from reclaimed wood by Matilija Canyon artist, Ryan Lange – its metal backs shaped like the Topa Topa mountain range.
Chief Peak, named for the highest summit in the range has a light tropical, grapefruity taste. Flatlands is tart and peppery. Weekender has citrus tastes with floral hints. And, Gadabout is a dark, rich beer with coffee. And that’s just for starters.
Fun fact: The guys leave a bottle of bourbon sitting on a barrel in the brewery to honor an old Czech tradition – or so they’ve been told. After a new brew recipe is made but before the yeast is added and sent to fermentation (the wort), the guys half fill a glass with the wort and half with bourbon, then drink the mixture to bless the new recipe. They call it the “hot scotchy” even though they use bourbon. Go figure!
So, come taste in their tasting room…
… then fill up your growler.
Or enjoy their beer on tap at various Ojai establishments.
And definitely stop at Topa Topa’s table at Taste of Ojai. Good vibes, great beer, one sip at a time.
